ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals third baseman Jhonny Peralta is going back on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained ligament in his surgically repaired left thumb. The 34-year-old Peralta is batting .221 with five homers and 13 RBI. He missed the first 57 games of the season before returning June 7.St. Louis made the move Tuesday.Peralta hasnt played since getting removed in a double switch on Sunday while being bothered by pain in his thumb. Theres been inflammation the last few weeks from getting jammed at the plate. It just didnt look good, we saw that early on, manager Mike Matheny said. The swing through just didnt feel right. The three-time All-Star underwent surgery in March for an injury in a different spot on the thumb from landing awkwardly on the thumb, but general manager John Mozeliak said there was no doubt the two injuries are related. The team is hopeful Peralta will resume baseball activities in 10 days but wasnt sure whether he would be ready to go at the end of the 15 days.I think we were trying to be patient with this, Mozeliak said. I think the best thing for him right now is some rest.Peralta averaged 19 homers and 73 RBI the previous two seasons. He moved to third base due to the emergence of rookie All-Star shortstop Aledmys Diaz.Greg Garcia started at third base on Monday and Jedd Gyorko was at that spot on Tuesday.Outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to replace Peralta. St. Louis also recalled right-handed reliever Miguel Socolovich and designated catcher Mike McKenry for assignment.Socolovich was called up because of the potential workload in the bullpen with 17 games in a row.Hazelbaker was on the opening day roster and has made 44 starts, batting .250 with seven homers and 19 RBI. Hes among the top pinch hitters in the majors with three homers, a .368 average and six RBI.Socolovich is 2-5 with a 2.79 ERA in 35 games at Memphis.Peralta, in the third year of a four-year, $53 million deal, joins fellow starters Brandon Moss and Matt Carpenter on the DL. Mozeliak said Moss (ankle) could begin a rehab assignment early next week.Channing Frye Jersey . SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. Hopefully, moving forward, we can build off this. The Thursday victory ended a brutal stretch in which the Giants played 19 consecutive games against playoff contenders -- four against the New York Mets, and three against the Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles, Marlins and Washington Nationals. The Giants went 7-12 in those games, taking them from a two-game lead in the West to their current two-game deficit. So, bring on the Braves, who have the third-worst record in the NL (116-23) since the All-Star break, and then the Diamondbacks (15-23), who have the second-worst mark in that span.ddddddddddddThe Giants will open the Atlanta series with right-hander Jeff Samardzija (10-9, 4.17 ERA) on the mound. He is coming off one of his best games of the season, a 2-0 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday in which he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning for the first time in his career. That night, he was up against Mets ace Noah Syndergaard. On Friday, he will see Braves rookie right-hander Joel De La Cruz, who is still looking for his first major league win. De La Cruz is 0-6 with a 4.47 ERA in 14 games (seven starts).De La Cruzs last effort was his worst, as he was roughed up for seven hits and six runs in 5 2/3 innings during a no-decision against the Nationals.Samardzija is 2-2 with a 3.41 ERA in 11 career appearances (five starts) against the Braves. He took the loss in a 5-3 defeat in Atlanta on May 30, allowing four earned runs in five innings.De La Cruz, who made his debut for the Braves on June 29, has never faced the Giants. The Braves are coming off a 2-2 split in their four-game series at Arizona. That constitutes a hot streak for a club that had lost seven of its previous eight. However, Atlanta might have to open the San Francisco series without its best hitter, as first baseman Freddie Freeman took a hard fall chasing a foul pop up in the Thursday win.Im just glad I didnt hit my head, Freeman said. Im going to be pretty sore (Friday). ' ' '
