ELDORET, Kenya -- So far, so good for David Rudisha at the Kenyan Olympic trials, but the notoriously tough competition dashed the hopes of one big name Thursday when 2012 London Games silver medalist Sally Kigyego only finished sixth in the womens 10,000 meters and didnt make the team for Rio.Rudisha, the world-record holder and Olympic champion in the 800 meters, qualified for the trials final in his event after winning his semifinal in 1 minute 43.40 seconds. That was Rudishas best time of a slow season so far.But at the Kenyan trials, which are always packed with world and Olympic medalists and fiercely contested, times dont matter nearly as much as just getting a place at the Olympics.Im out to make the team, thats my goal, and if we go to the Olympics ... I aspire to great things, Rudisha said.Rudisha ran in the bunch for 600 meters then kicked ahead with his long strides to win. He will now compete in the final Friday hoping to clinch one of the two automatic places in Rio de Janeiro for the top two finishers in each event. Kenya also gives a wild card place at the Olympics to a third athlete in each event, which is up to track officials discretion.Olympic silver medalist Kigyego wont go to Rio after she faded in the 10,000 final in Eldoret, a famed long-distance training town in western Kenya where the high altitude and thin air breeds world-beating runners, but makes competing on the track more difficult than normal. Reigning 10,000 meters world champion Vivian Cheruiyot won the final and Betsy Saina finished second to claim the two automatic places. Recently-crowned African champion Alice Aprot was given the wild card before the trials, meaning the field was racing for just two places.Cheruiyot is a two-time world champion in the 5,000 and in the 10,000 but is missing an Olympic gold medal. She won silver in the 5,000 and bronze in the 10,000 in London. Also Thursday, 2015 world silver medalist Caleb Ndiku set up another shot at Olympic and world champion Mo Farah in Rio after winning a ferocious mens 5,000 meters final. Ndiku won a sprint finish over world championships bronze medalist Isiah Koech, who also qualified. Kenyas track federation was yet to announce the wild card in the mens 5,000.Ezekiel Kemboi, the 3,000 meters steeplechase king and defending Olympic champion, cruised into Fridays final with a comfortable third-place finish in the semifinals. That Kenyan trials final could easily be an Olympic final with Kemboi, former world and Olympic champion Brimin Kipruto, two-time world silver medalist Conseslus Kipruto, Olympic bronze medalist Abel Mutai and Paul Kipsiele Koech, another former Olympic medalist, all battling to be in the top two.Rudisha faces tough opposition in his final, too. Hell be challenged by, among others, local rival Ferguson Rotich, who has beaten Rudisha twice this year, London bronze medalist Timothy Kitum and two former world junior champions.Adidas NMD XR1 Suomi . Booth picked up 65 caps after making her national team debut in 2002 at the age of 17. She most recently played for Sky Blue FC of the National Womens Soccer League. "It just felt like it was my time to move on," she said in a phone interview from her hometown of Burlington, Ont.BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Roy Williams thought Assembly Hall put on a perfect show Wednesday night.Fans roared when Cubs outfielder and former Hoosiers star Kyle Schwarber was introduced as honorary game captain. They made Chicago Blackhawks national anthem singer and Indiana alum James Cornelison feel right at home by cheering through his performance of the song. The fans stayed on their feet most of the night and did whatever they could to keep the Hoosiers on track for their fifth straight home win against a top three team. Then there was the curious case of Williams Tar Heels.Seven days after returning from a four-game Hawaiian road trip, one on which they trailed for a combined total of 16 seconds, No. 3 North Carolina never led and spent most of the game trying to fight its way out of a double-digit deficit before finally losing 76-67 to No. 13 Indiana.Williams was understandably unhappy. We were not ready to play, he said. We did not shoot free throws, we didnt rebound the basketball, we didnt get the loose balls, At the half, they had more second-chance points -- they had five or six fast-break points -- and we had none. Everything, everything (went wrong).Usually, Williams and his teams leave opponents frustrated and searching for answers. But it was obvious from the opening minutes Wednesday that this was not going to be a typical game.North Carolina (7-1) gave up the first two baskets, trailed 17-7 in less than 6 minutes and found itself facing a 28-11 deficit midway through the first half.Perhaps even more disconcerting was that Williams couldnt explain how his team came out so flat in such a raucous environment. It was a wonderful crowd.dddddddddddd. Gosh, I would like to play in front of a crowd like that in the Smith Center every night other than the Duke game, Williams said. It was a big-time crowd, but Ive got to coach better and the players have to play better. They need to respond better, too.The Tar Heels came into the ACC-Big Ten Challenge as the nights feature attraction. They were averaging 92.9 points and shooting 51.9 percent from the field. And yet, against the Big Tens highest scoring team, North Carolina started the night 5 of 17 from the field and just 2 of 9 on 2-point shots.Youve just got to learn that you cant be attacked. They came out, they wanted it more at the beginning, we found ourselves in a hole and we tried to come back, guard Joel Berry II said after scoring eight points. But it was just too late.North Carolina came back in the second half, cutting the deficit to 61-57 with 4:52 to go, but they never made it a one-possession game and Indiana (5-1) pulled away for their second straight win since a befuddling upset at IPFW .I dont think our kids understood what we were talking about when we said how emotional it was going to be, how much they are going to be, Williams said. They did not correct everything from Mississippi Valley State (Sundays game). My guess, and purely a guess, (Indiana coach) Tom (Crean) wished they didnt even have Mississippi Valley State. He probably wanted us the next game.---More AP college basketball: www.collegebasketball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 . ' ' '
