ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak made it clear Thursday that preseason games are going to matter -- a lot -- when he decides the winner of the teams quarterback competition. The defending Super Bowl champions are a week away from their preseason opener, in Chicago on Aug. 11. Kubiak said after Thursdays practice he wants to see how his three quarterbacks -- Mark Sanchez, Trevor Siemian and rookie Paxton Lynch -- handle themselves in preseason games before he makes a decision on a starter.I want to watch them play, Kubiak said. Im going to put a number of throws on each one of them. Thats going to have a lot to do with decision-making time, to be honest with you.Kubiak has previously hinted that the preseason games would play a big role in deciding who will replace Peyton Manning as the Broncos quarterback, but Thursday was the first time in training camp he made those intentions so clear. In recent days, Kubiak has said the three quarterbacks have all held serve, as it were. The three players largely remain in the same order on the depth chart that they were during much of the offseason program and through the first week of training camp.Sanchez has taken most of the work with the starting offense, but Siemian has received plenty of time with the starting group as well. Kubiak said Thursday he has not yet decided how the playing time will be divided at quarterback in the preseason opener against the Bears.Havent even thought about it, not yet, Kubiak said.Kubiak and offensive coordinator Rick Dennison have said they dont have a timetable in mind to name a starter. Traditionally, the teams third preseason game has been the one the Broncos treat most like a regular-season game. To do that again, the Broncos would have to name a starting quarterback before the Aug. 27 game against the Los Angeles Rams.I think you earn everything you receive in this league, Sanchez said earlier this week about trying to win the job. There is a difference between going out and earning it and trying too hard, or trying to do too much and feeling like, if on this one last rep if I do this, then they are going to name me the starter. You cant think like that. You put too much pressure on the play and on the other players around you.You just have to just go play.Siemian, who spent his rookie season in 2015 as the Broncos No. 3 or No. 2 quarterback, has been asked several times if he believes hes ready for the starting job.Absolutely, thats the goal, Siemian said. You know, if that werent my mindset, Id be in a whole heck of a lot of trouble if it happened. Thats my mindset, something Im ready for. Well see what happens.Lynch, who was the teams first-round pick in this years draft, has received a smattering of snaps in training camp with the starters on offense, but he has worked as the No. 3 quarterback much of the time.Dustin Pedroia Red Sox Jersey .
