MIAMI -- Zack Greinke said he was merely trying to beat the Miami Marlins and not competing with teammate Clayton Kershaw. Greinke allowed one run in eight innings and won his fourth start in a row Wednesday by pitching the Los Angeles Dodgers past Miami 4-1. The right-hander improved to 12-3 and tied major-league ERA leader Kershaw and Hyun-Jin Ryu for the team lead in victories. Greinke said theres no rivalry among the Dodgers pitchers, not even a friendly one. "Kersh is on such another level that if you try to do better than him, youre going to get your feelings hurt," Greinke said. Actually, Greinke has been tough to top lately, with an ERA of 0.41 over his past three starts. With LeBron James watching from behind home plate, Greinke allowed Miami six hits, walked none and lowered his ERA to 2.91. The Marlins lone run came on a first-inning homer by Giancarlo Stanton. They had only one base runner against Greinke over his final 4 1-3 innings. "They actually hit him a little bit early, and you saw him make a quick adjustment and start using a lot more curveballs," manager Don Mattingly said. "It was kind of cool to watch him turn the page and throw more breaking balls and change speeds a lot more. All of a sudden he was getting quick innings." Kershaw is scheduled to pitch the final game of the series Thursday. Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt said he believes the teams starters do compete with each other, which makes them all better. "They wouldnt be where theyre at without a competitive nature," Honeycutt said. "Theres a sense of pride. When Kersh goes out and sets the tone, Zack wants to go deeper in games." While Greinke gave the Marlins fits, sloppy defence doomed them for the second night in a row. They committed a season-high three errors, including two in the Dodgers three-run fourth inning. Two Marlins errors led to two unearned runs in their 6-4 loss Tuesday. "Weve got to pick it up defensively. Were making way too many mistakes," manager Mike Redmond said. "We cant make a lot of mistakes, especially against such a good team." Yasiel Puig was back in the Dodgers starting lineup. He appeared to tweak his lower left leg in the early going and limped slightly at times but stayed in the game. Puig went 0 for 5 and is batting .167 (7 for 42) over his past 11 games. The rookie sensation was back in right field after being held out of the starting lineup for one game because of his slump. "He has some good swings, I thought," Mattingly said. The announced crowd of 24,996 included Puigs friend, James, making his first visit to Marlins Park. James sat next to one of the aquariums along the backstop and drew the nights biggest cheer when he was shown on the video scoreboard as Puig stepped to the plate. "I think Puig thought it was for him," Redmond said. "That was kind of funny." The Dodgers improved to 27-5 since the All-Star break, and theyve won 21 of their past 24 road games. Theyre unbeaten in their past 18 series since mid-June. Los Angeles had only seven hits and went 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position. Much of the Dodgers offence came from Hanley Ramirez, who had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run against his former team. Aside from Stantons homer, only two Marlins reached second base against Greinke, and one was picked off. Kenley Jansen completed the six-hitter by pitching the ninth for his 21st save in 24 chances. He gave up a walk before centre fielder Andre Ethier made a long run and caught Adeiny Hechavarrias drive at the base of the wall to end the game. That left the Marlins (48-77) back on pace to lose 100 games. Ex-Dodger Nathan Eovaldi (2-4) hit 100 mph on the radar gun and allowed only two earned runs in seven innings. But he was again hurt by the poor run support that has plagued him this season, and fell to 0-4 in his past seven starts. "I felt good," Eovaldi said. "Fastball command was there, off-speed stuff was there. I just had that bump in the road in the fourth inning." Puig reached on a wild throw by third baseman Ed Lucas to start the fourth, and Los Angeles took advantage of the mistake. Ramirez doubled home a run, Ethier put the Dodgers ahead with an RBI single, and Ramirez came home on a wild pickoff throw to first by Eovaldi to make the score 3-1. Stantons 16th homer in the first put the Marlins ahead 1-0. Their first two batters singled in the second, but Greinke pitched out of the jam. Notes: Ethier had two hits to improve his career average against Miami to .395. ... Stanton had two hits and is 7 for 13 in the series. ... Greinke improved to 3-0 in five starts against the Marlins.Dikembe Mutombo Jersey . I play no tennis. I enjoy shooting the gun; I dont necessarily like to point it at animals. I play cards, not very well. But what I have done for probably 12 to 14 hours a day for the last number of years is coach football. So I would have a difficult time not being involved in the game and not being a coach.Miles boasts the highest winning percentage in modern-day LSU history (.770) and sits second on the schools all-time wins list with a record of 114-34. In his 11-plus seasons in the SEC, Miles teams claimed a 2007 BCS championship, played for another national title in 2011 and won three conference titles. However, the program has not lived up to its lofty expectations in recent years. The 2016 squad was a preseason top-10 team, but LSU fell out of the national polls after Saturdays 18-13 loss to Auburn dropped the Tigers to 2-2.Miles, who will turn 63 in November, said LSU athletic director Joe Alleva informed him of his firing at a face-to-face meeting Sunday. Miles said he did not fight the decision to end his LSU run in its 12th season. It was beyond fighting, Miles said. The enjoyment of being here, the enjoyment of the community, the experiences that my familys had, its too important to me to fight over. Its history. Its what we are. If they see that a change makes the Tigers better, then I am for them.Although Miles said a cultural divide within LSUs athletic department led to his exit -- school power brokers almost fired him in November in a highly public tug-of-war -- he thanked Alleva for the opportunity to address the Tigers at a team meeting Sunday.I recognize in those decisions so many times, you can see where its not necessary that the ex-head coach says goodbye, Miles said. But they gave me that opportunity, and I took advantage of it and did not stay long, but wished them well. They deserve the bestt.dddddddddddd I think Ed Orgeron will do a great job for them, and I exited about as fast as I could.Meanwhile, at his introductory news conference on Monday, Orgeron vowed to tweak the program in several ways -- most notably an offense that was bogged down in recent years under Miles and departed offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. Were going to spread the ball out a little bit, do some different things, change the style of play, Orgeron said. Theres a lot of things on offense that weve done well running the football. We want to have a different passing game, we want to be more creative, find ways for the quarterback to get the ball down the field throwing it.Obviously we know that people load up the box on Leonard [Fournette] and Derrius Guice, Orgeron continued. We want to put the ball in our playmakers hands. We want to make short, easy throws for the quarterback and move the ball down the field, score points. Youve got to score points in our business.Miles has been in coaching since 1980, when he became a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Michigan. His weekends have been consumed with football ever since, with assistant coaching stops at Colorado, Michigan, Oklahoma State and with the Dallas Cowboys, and head-coaching stints at Oklahoma State (2001-04) and LSU (2005-16).This will be Miles first unscheduled fall weekend off in decades, and he said he isnt sure what he will do. His oldest son, Manny, is a walk-on quarterback at North Carolina, and Miles suggested he might make an impromptu trip to see the Tar Heels visit Florida State on Saturday.I think Ill see if my son can arrange a ticket, Miles said. I can tell you one thing, Im going to be rooting for the LSU Tigers, Im going to be rooting for the Tar Heels, Im going to be rooting for the Cowboys, and Im going to be rooting for Michigan. And then when Ben [his youngest son, a Nebraska commit] ends up at the school that hes committed to, then Im going to root for them. Its just the way it is. ' ' '
